FALL 2008 IMMIGRATION ORIENTATION AND CHECK-IN

Immigration Orientation is required for all F-1 international students who are new students at FIU (freshman, transfer students and graduate students).  The following topics are covered: maintaining valid visa status, SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System), enrollment requirements, employment, social security numbers, medical insurance, as well as on-campus and off-campus resources for international students.

Note: Check with the Office of Campus Life & Orientation and your academic department regarding additional orientation programs that you may be required to attend! Check the FIU academic calendar for important dates and deadlines!

Mandatory Check-In

All F-1 students must check in with the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSS) within 10 days of arriving in the United States, but no later than September 8, 2008.

  • Students who are arriving from abroad must present the following documents to ISSS at the time of check-in:
    • Valid Passport/F-1 visa stamp           
    • I-94
    • I-20
  • Students who are already in the United States and received an I-20 from FIU must present the following documents to ISSS at the time of check-in:
    • Valid Passport
    • I-94
    • I-20
    • Transfer Form (for students who are transferring from another U.S. institution)
  • Students who are already in the United States and did NOT receive an I-20 from FIU must set up an appointment with an international student advisor no later than August 22, 2008. At the time of the appointment, the advisor will determine whether or not a change in immigration status is required.

ATTENTION Transfer Students:

Your FIU I-20 was issued for “Transfer Pending From: (Previous School Name)[see item #3 on I-20]as you are REQUIRED to complete an Immigration School Transfer Notification procedure. If not traveling with FIU I-20, you must bring your documents to the ISSS Office NO LATER THAN September 8th, 2008.

If all is in order, you will be issued a new I-20 for “Continued Attendance” to complete the required immigration procedure. If you are traveling and reentering U.S. with FIU I-20, report to ISSS as soon as you can upon arrival on campus but NO LATER THAN September 8th, 2008.
