Visiting Scholars - Health Care and Insurance

General Information | Immigration Regulations | Health Care and Insurance | Housing Dependents | Social Security | Taxes | Other Employment | Access to University Services

Health care in the United States can be very expensive. As a J-l, you are required to have health insurance which meets certain requirements of the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the State of Florida , and Florida International University for you, your spouse, and all children who are listed on the DS-2019. The insurance policy must include medical evacuation and repatriation benefits in addition to major medical.

FlU has an insurance plan that meets these requirements, which J-l visitors and dependents are required to purchase. Only J-l visitors (and dependents) who are covered through one of the State of Florida Employee approved health plans, may have an alternate insurance plan approved. However, since these plans do not include provisions for medical evacuation and repatriation, you are required to purchase a policy from the Office of International Student and Scholar Services to provide this coverage.

Rates for health insurance vary according to your term of appointment. You may purchase health insurance in monthly multiples, or per academic year. Medical insurance must be purchased prior to issuance of the DS-2019.
