Visiting Scholars

Welcome

The FIU Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) administers the university’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is a federal program overseen by the Department of State that was designed based on the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. This Act promotes mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange and it provides eligible foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in exchange programs in the United States and then return home to share their experiences.

At FIU, this program is an essential component of the university’s efforts for internationalization and the promotion of global understanding through the pursuit of collaborative academic and research initiatives. These efforts are channeled through the hosting of students and scholars for the purpose of “teaching, instructing or lecturing, studying, observing, conducting research, consulting, demonstrating special skills or receiving training in the general interests of academic international exchange”.
